Shinji Ikari glares in a scene from the Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time theatrical anime film.

Just like Unit 01, the latest (and final) Evangelion film, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, continues to go berserk on the Japanese domestic box office, reaching another record amount for the franchise just as the third State of Emergency to combat the coronavirus closes cinemas in Japan’s most populous metropolitan regions.

As of April 25, the film's 49th day in theaters in Japan, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 has brought in a total of 8,277,420,000 yen (US$75,673,643) at the Japanese box office on the back of 5,396,230 tickets sold. This is a taking of 478,105,950 yen (US$4,440,434) over the last week and makes the film only 1.73 billion yen shy of the coveted 10 billion yen mark, and only 233 million yen away from outgrossing Shin Godzilla, director Hideaki Anno’s highest-grossing Japanese film to date.

In normal times, these milestones would only be a few weeks away, but due to the third State of Emergency–which started on April 25 and lasts until May 11–closing cinemas in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo, it may take a little while longer for those milestones to be met–if they’re met at all.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 finally opened in Japan after being delayed twice due to the coronavirus pandemic on March 8, breaking franchise records on the first day and eventually becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise in Japan in less than a month, then the highest-grossing worldwide in 35 days. It is the longest film in the franchise (not including compilations or special screenings). There is no word yet on an international release of the film.
