JUJUSTU KAISEN continues to be one of the most popular anime series in Japan right now, topping streaming platform rankings for the third month in a row. GEM Partners, a Japanese marketing firm that focuses on the entertainment industry, revealed its top 20 most watch series on Japanese SVOD (flat-fee) streaming service for March and April, tracking all the major streaming platforms.
We last looked at the charts back in March, showing that JUJUTSU KAISEN was the most-watched series in Japan in February. GEM gathers the information by surveying around 7,000 Japanese people per week aged between 16 and 69 on what they watched that week on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, U-NEXT, Hulu Japan, Disney+, docomo anime store, dTV, ABEMA Premium, and Paravi. The marketing company combined that information into one list to find the most-watched content on streaming platforms for April, as well as parsing the information for each service for March and April.
Here's is the overall top 10 most viewed shows on Japanese SVOD services April 2021:
10. Evangelion
9. The Walking Dead
8. HITOSHI MATSUMOTO Presents Documental (variety show)
5. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
4. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
2. Case Closed
Overall, JUJUTSU KAISEN actually saw a decrease in viewers month to month, chopping 376 points off its ranking, but was still a little under double the number of points second-place Case Closed, which saw a huge 204 point increase and jumping seven spots. The reason behind Case Closed's increase is due to the very popular anime film currently in cinemas, which is breaking records for the franchise. Both Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer each dropped a rank but saw very minimal decreases in points, which are close to on par with each other and Case Closed.
My Hero Academia had the biggest jump in rankings though, going from 40th in March to 7th in April thanks mostly due to the new season currently airing, which is streaming weekly on multiple platforms in Japan.
In the top 20, 14 of the most-watched series on streaming are anime.
The full top 20 ranking in Japanese:
In March, JUJUTSU KAISEN was ranked first on five of the streaming platforms, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, U-NEXT, and d anime store, while in April, that dropped to just three, Netflix, Amazon, and U-NEXT, and came in second on d anime store behind That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Case Closed took JUJUTSU KAISEN's spot on Hulu, with the Gege Akutami manga adaptation dropping out of the top three.
To Your Eternity is very popular on Netflix, coming in second in both March and April on the platform, while Attack on Titan comes in third on Netflix and second on U-NEXT over those two months.
On Disney+ in Japan, Marvel's TV outings are continuing to be popular, with Wandavision being the most watched in March, and The Falcon and Winter Soldier being the most-watched in April. Both ABEMA Premium and Pavari had all three of their slots taken up by Japanese and Korean dramas.
Full top three most-watched content on streaming services in Japan by service (white boxes are April, grey is March):
It's clear from this data that still despite the wide breadth of content available on Japanese streaming platforms, the general population is choosing to tune into anime more and more.
