Sanrio announced the final results of the 36th annual character popularity contest, "Sanrio Character Ranking 2021," on June 8. With the expansion of voting methods and the establishment of foreign language websites, the total number of votes cast reached a record high of 21,346,750 this year.
While Cinnamoroll took the top spot for the second year in a row, the rock band-themed franchise SHOW BY ROCK!! ranked eighth, the same as last year, with a total votes of 872,077. Its popularity was especially strong in Korea, where it beat other popular characters to become No.1.
The SHOW BY ROCK!! franchise was launched in 2012, and its first smartphone game app was released in the following year. Its first TV anime SHOW BY ROCK!! was aired in Japan from April to June 2015, then followed by SHOW BY ROCK!! Short!! from June to September 2016, SHOW BY ROCK!!# from October to December 2016, SHOW BY ROCK!! MASHUMAIRESH!! from January to March 2020, and SHOW BY ROCK!! STARS!! from January to March 2021.
